2010 DECA VBC Retailing National Champions
Congratulations to team "Ravioli:DaSteeziest:" the 2010 DECA VBC Retailing national champions! Team members Brendon Norton, Christopher Croatti, and Sean Marchand are from Hillsboro-Deering High School, Hillsboro, NH.
The top 16 teams out of over 3,000 teams participated in the DECA Retailing track at the national conference held in Louisville, Kentucky from April 24 - 27. The qualifiers were determined during the school year through their participation in one of two qualifying rounds. The first and second place teams from each region from each Challenge participated in the competition at the ICDC.

Ravioli: DaSteeziest, from Hillsboro-Deering High School in New Hampshire, started out as two separate teams last fall as the Virtual Business-Retailing season got started- Ravioli Retribution and Got Steez. The hope was to have two teams qualify for the International Career Development Conference in Kentucky and compete for the top honors. Unfortunately, with the stiff competition in the North Atlantic Region both teams were on the outside looking in after the fall challenge. So the teams merged and we became Ravioli: DaSteeziest and worked hard to earn first place in the North Atlantic Region in the winter challenge.
The end of the winter challenge coincided with the end of our semester here at H-D and we all had new classes to attend and not necessarily with each other. As our DECA advisor Mr. Marc Payeur kept harping on us to practice we had to figure out when in our schedule we could do it. So we finally decided that we would commit our lunches to each other and started to practice every day at lunch in Mr. Payeur’s room. We learned each other’s strong points on the whole simulation and figure out who was better and faster at opening and operating the store.
Once we got to the ICDC, we were really excited to watch some of the other teams compete. When we saw only one team make a profit before we got on, we were confident that we could make a profit. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and we went out of business first in our match and got sent to the loser’s bracket. When we debriefed, we realized what we forgot. Our next match, we made a profit and won our next match.
We watched some of the other teams and we quickly realized that "Food Spoils" and "I AM JOHN GALT" were teams to worry about. Both teams had been making positive gains also. When "I AM JOHN GALT” came down to the losers bracket we knew they would be tough. However our two teams kept winning straight through to the final match. "Food Spoils" and "JDJ" made it to the final match from the winner’s bracket and we had a great match set up. After a quick bounce in the negatives we began making profit and leaping ahead. “Food Spoils” and “I AM JOHN GALT” were in a neck and neck battle for second. When “JDJ” moved their store “I AM JOHN GALT” began making large weekly profits and gaining on us. Fortunately for us, time ran out before they caught up. It was an exciting finish to a wicked fun competition.
We would like to congratulate "I AM JOHN GALT" and "Food Spoils" for their 2nd and 3rd place awards and to "JDJ", as well as all the other teams that made it to the ICDC, for a good effort. We also want to thank our teacher Mr. Payeur for how much he pushed and supported us, and to DECA and Knowledge Matters for this great experience.
Sincerely, Christopher Croatti, Sean Marchand, and Brendon Norton Hillsboro-Deering High SchoolNew Hampshire
