Entering DECA our junior years, we would have never imagined being international champions. From the first time we played Virtual Business Sports we were hooked. Our first year we finished one spot away from making it to nationals, however, we did place first in Missouri, which we thought was really big at the time.
We came back our senior year with a new team member and a goal of making nationals in mind. In the first round of the challenge we hit a dry spell and failed to qualify. We knew we only had one more chance to meet our goal of qualifying. We changed our team name to “Lunesta” and things looked good at the beginning of the second challenge. We tried a new method and quickly found out how successful it was. We eventually won the central region and found our way to ICDC at last.
Quickly we found success in the first round picking up a win, but it was short lived. The second round we were a little too confident and were sent to the loser’s bracket. That night we had a chance to reevaluate our strategy and prepare for the final day of competition. Our preparation paid off as we won the third round convincingly. After the win we once again gained our confidence in time for the finals. The final simulation began and we jumped out to an early lead. However we panicked due to a schedule conflict. Then once we slowed down and looked at the schedule we calmed down and knew our score would pick up towards the end. As each game finished we saw our score get closer and closer to the leader. With two games left we moved into first place. Entering one of the most nerve racking moments of our young adult lives we knew we were on the verge of winning it all. Immediately after the final game the scoreboard reflected “Lunesta” in first place we went crazy with excitement.
We all would like to thank our advisor, Martha Cubbage for offering us this opportunity and her husband Steven for traveling with us to ICDC. We would also like to thank our families and everyone who supported us throughout the years.
Sincerely,
Josh Newman, Tyler Dobson, Ross Wolfe
